The Chatfield solid waste program is designed to encourage recycling, to be neat and clean and to charge fees based on the volume of trash generated by each user.

The more each household recycles, the lower the volume of garbage, in turn passing the savings directly to the user by reducing the number of contractor garbage bags that need to be purchased.

The "bag system" is designed to be a win / win system both for the environment and the consumer.

Fillmore County

Garbage* (yellow bags) - Each Wednesday
Recyclables - Every Tuesday

Olmsted County

Garbage* (yellow bags) - Each Thursday
Recyclables - Every Tuesday

*Garbage includes all of those items which are not recyclable. Residents must use the yellow contractor bags for garbage collection. These bags are available at CHS, Kwik Trip and Sunshine Foods.

The bags are available in two sizes, 15 gallon (20 lb. weight limit) and 33 gallon (40 lb. weight limit). The bag price is set to cover the cost of dumping the garbage at the landfill.

Garbage and Recycling fees are based on the volume of trash generated by each household.

Garbage Rates (2023)

Base Charge: $8.80 (includes weekly pick-up for residents)

The bulk or weight of the garbage is paid for with the use of the yellow contractor bags. Yellow bags are available at Kwik Trip and Sunshine Foods. $2.15 for a 33 gallon bag or $1.50 for a 15 gallon bag.

Non-Baggable

Large items, such as appliances & furniture, can be disposed of at the curb, too. Since large items do not fit into a bag, stickers are required. There are small and large stickers, depending on the item that you want to throw away. These stickers may be purchased at Cenex and Kwik Trip.

Prior to purchasing a sticker, contact Bill Hanson to describe your specific item and schedule pick up. There is a large amount of variability in appliances and furniture, which could make your item fall into the other category.

$10.00 - Furniture / Miscellaneous Sticker: Beds, box springs, carpet, carpet pads, chairs, couches, dressers, electronics, furniture, humidifiers, mattresses, metal cabinets.
$25.00 - Appliance Sticker: Air Conditioners, computer monitor, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, dryers, freezers, hot water heaters, microwaves, refrigerators, stoves, televisions, washers.
