 All dogs and cats that are at least 6 months old are required to be licensed.  Licenses are due by July 1 each year.  To purchase a license, please fill out the Animal License Application then either mail it or bring it in to city hall with payment.

City, county, state and federal elections are held in even-numbered years. Primary elections are held on the second Tuesday in August. General elections are held on the first Tuesday in November. All elections, general and special, shall be conducted under the general election laws of the State of Minnesota. Find information on voter registration, precincts and polling locations.

Fun Facts about Chatfield

• Chatfield was the original Fillmore County Seat.
• Chatfield is the home of the only stop light in Fillmore County!
• Twiford paid a grand total of $195.60 for this town site.
• Some of the first enterprises included a sawmill, a brickyard, flourmills, a woolen mill, an iron foundry, a door sash and blind factory, a broom factory and a cheese factory.
• Most of the brick buildings on Main Street were built between 1870 and 1900. These buildings were mostly constructed of Chatfield brick and are a beautiful and historical addition to our community.

The Chatfield solid waste program is designed to encourage recycling, to be neat and clean and to charge fees based on the volume of trash generated by each user.

The more each household recycles, the lower the volume of garbage, in turn passing the savings directly to the user by reducing the number of contractor garbage bags that need to be purchased.

The "bag system" is designed to be a win / win system both for the environment and the consumer.

Residents are required to keep their lawns mowed to a height of no more than eight inches.  Specific restrictions also govern landscaping and material located within right-of-ways and easements.  Trees located in the boulevard are maintained by the city.  All other trees are the responsibility of the property owner.

Pet licenses are issued by the City Clerks office and may be purchased at City Hall. More information is available on the Pets & Animals page.

For burning permits within city limits contact the Chatfield Fire Chief at 507-884-4423.

The DNR issues burning permits outside of the city limits. For more information see Burning Permit Information.

Burning Permits are required when:

• when the fire is more than 3 feet high and 3 feet in diameter.
• when the ground is not completely covered by a minimum of 3 inches of snow.
• when the fire is not contained in either an approved burner or in a cooking or heating device such as charcoal grill or camp stove.

Marriage licenses, drivers licenses, birth and death records are handled by either Fillmore County, Olmsted County or the a Drivers Vehicle Station;

The Public Works Department is responsible for the planning, operation and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system and the storm drainage system.  Water and sanitary sewer services within the city are municipally owned and operated.  Additional utility service providers are listed below.
